This past Wednesday a crew from JA’s took a little side trip into the St John’s campus to watch the St.Johns/Villanova mens soccer game. Will Steiner, a former employee of JA’s, is a standout goalkeeper for the Wildcats and has been a fixture in their goal for the past 4 years.
So a gaggle of us JAers rented a van from Broward (maybe we’ll get a discount for the plug?) and enjoyed a night of soccer the “Steiner” way. After we arrived at the field we plunged right into the Steiner tailgate that consisted of various salads (Heinz and I passed on those), a pasta dish prepared by Monalisa’s (Boooo!!) but Heinz and I indulged and enjoyed anyway) and a delicious Lobster Mac & Cheese created by Peggy Steiner (Chef Phil watch out!!). We washed down all that food with some Summer Hummer drink concocted by Heinz.
We were entertained by a hard fought game that the Wildcats lost in the second OT period. Will was outstanding and single-handed kept the Wildcats in the game until the very end (no offense to the other Villanova players but we calls ’em as we sees ’em). A quaint ritual of watching a soccer game with the Steiners is that you have to switch your seats at halftime from one end of the field to the other in order to be in prime position to watch Will’s action.
Since the game went into double OT this resulted in three separate pilgrimages from one end to the other. During the second pilgrimage Luke and I contemplated a divergence back to the van for some more Mac & Cheese but decided it wasn’t worth it. (one of the crosses that I have to bear is that my laziness sometimes cancels out my gluttiness impulses).
On the last hike to Will’s end Heinz muttered “if I wanted this much exercise I would have signed up for a 5k race” but, on the bright side, it did help to work off that third plate of tailgate food. All in all a great night was had by all. Much thanks to the Steiner family for their outstanding hospitality!!!
